SURFACE PREPARATION
Bonding surfaces must be clean, sound, and free from any materials that may inhibit bond such as oil, dirt, asphalt, sealing compounds, acids, wax, and loose debris. Do not use acid etching, solvents, or adhesive removers as means of cleaning the substrate. Smooth concrete surfaces should be mechanically abraded by scarifying, grinding, shot-blasting or other approved methods. The minimum temperature for the substrate must be 50ºF (10ºC). In hot ambient temperatures, pre-wet the substrate with water before applying Rapid Set® Skim Coat. Concrete substrates should be free of hydrostatic pressure.
FIELD TESTS
Conduct field tests using the prepared substrate and finished floor covering to determine if Rapid Set® Skim Coat is suitable for your intended use.
MIX
Mix using a 1/2'” drill mixer with a mixing paddle, or a margin trowel for small jobs. Use 4 quarts of clean water per 20-lb bag. First add the water to mixing container, then add the dry Rapid Set® Skim Coat. Mix for 2 to 3 minutes. Do not add additional water after initial mixing. Adding more water than recommended may induce clumps and air voids in the finished product. Do not add any additives or admixtures except Rapid Set® Set Control® retarding admixture to extend working time and Flow Control® to increase the flow of the product. Contact CTS Cement for more information about the use of these additives.
PLACING
After mixing, screed, trowel and/or float to achieve the desired finish. The working time of Rapid Set® Skim Coat is approximately 15-20 minutes at 70ºF (21ºC) ambient temperature. CURE: Rapid Set® Skim Coat does not require water curing or curing compound.
COVERAGE & PACKAGING
Rapid Set® Skim Coat is available in 20-lb (9.1-kg) bags. One 20-lb bag will have skim coat coverage of 66.6 ft2 at 1/8” depth or 33.4 ft2 at 1/4” depth. Coverage may vary due to jobsite conditions.
